A Lullymore Christmas

Today we visited Lullymore Heritage and Discovery Park for their big Christmas event. The day was filled with all sorts of fun including the arrival of Santa and his elves by train, an indoor snow shower, a visit to a fairy village, and a serious heart to heart with Santa. Christmas is definitely more fun with kids!

Ryan's Little Buddy

Yesterday, Ryan and I found a baby bird that had fallen out of the tree in front of our apartment. After seeing the bird several time throughout the day, we began feeling bad and decided that we needed to do something to help. Luckily, our friends Tiffany and James had found a bird about a month ago and had the address of a couple who takes care of baby birds.

Watching the bird huddled in the corner, we decided that the least we could do was to take the bird to the shelter. So we ventured out with a box and began our adventure of trying to catch the bird and bring it into our apartment for the night. When we got it into the apartment, Ryan did his best to make the bird feel at home. Now I've always thought of myself as a pretty compassionate person, but when it comes to birds, I have to say that Ryan is MUCH more compassionate than I am.

Once we got the bird inside, Ryan crumpled up some toilet paper for a bed and even smushed up some fruit for it to eat. When we closed the door to the room it was in, Ryan thought the room seemed too dark so he put his laptop in the room so the bird wouldn't get scared. It was so cute watching Ryan going back into the room throughout the night to check on the bird.

When we woke up in the morning, Ryan was so excited to see that the bird had actually eaten his fruit concoction. On his way to work, Ryan dropped the bird off at the shelter and said goodbye to his little friend. Although it was a short-lived adventure, it was SO entertaining to watch Ryan with his "little buddy." I can't help but think that if Ryan was that compassionate with a bird, there's no doubt he's gonna be an awesome dad one day.

A Drive-In Bbq

Last night we went to the drive-in movies with some friends. To make the most of our "drive-in" experience, we brought along our mini grill and had a bbq during the movie. Although the wind wasn't quite as cooperative as we would've liked, it was fun getting to watch a movie under the stars.

And yes, that's an actual hammock that Tiffany and James are laying on. They took apart their hammock from home and put it together at the drive-in's. We were quite impressed by their innovation!

My Latest Obsession

About a month ago, Ryan and I decided to go on a hike at Usery Pass. Since that day, I have become completely obsessed with hiking! On the weekdays I sit at my desk dreaming about hiking. And on Saturdays, I wake up early out our of sheer excitment to get on the mountain. According to Ryan, "I have a problem." ;-)

On Saturday I went hiking with a few of my friends and was so ancy to get up on the mountain I actually went early and hiked the trail once before everyone else got there. I don't know if it's the fresh air or the combo of that and the amazing workout, but I absolutely LOVE hiking! On Sunday morning I even tried to convince Ryan that hiking is a "Sabbath Day activity" (apparently he doesn't agree). So if you've wondered why my blogging has been a bit sluggish lately (which you probably didn't even notice), it's merely because I've been a little preoccupied with my new "obsession."

The Perfect Day...

Yesterday was what I would consider an absolutely "perfect day." After sleeping in, Ryan and I got ready for the day and headed to the fruit market for some fresh fruit. After returning home and cutting up our newly purchased fruit, we headed off to Usery Pass for a hike. After a 2-3 hour hike in the perfect 85 degree Arizona weather, we came home and Ryan watched a basketball game with his brother while I sat by the pool surfing the web. After a couple of hours of relaxing by the pool in the most comfortable patio furniture in the world, we got ready and spent the evening exploring Phoenix with friends on the new Valley Metro Light Rail. Although I'm sure all of this doesn't sound exciting to most, it's pretty much what I would consider the "perfect day." If only every day could be like that...

Kite Flying Festival

This weekend Ryan and I attended the "Pakistani Kite Flying Festival" in Mesa. After reading about the huge crouds the event drew in over the past few years, we decided we couldn't bear to miss out on this unique opportunity. Although it may come as a suprise to most, neither Ryan or I have any connection to the Pakistani culture. ;-) Luckily, the event is open to everyone so we thought we would join in on the fun. The festival basically consisted of people from Pakistan (we were one of the few without turbans) getting together for an intense day of kite flying. Unfortunately, we got there a little late in the day and weren't prepared with a kite. But you better believe that next year we'll be prepared with the best Pakistani kite you've ever seen! Begin preparing yourself for next year's post!

Yes Man

After watching the movie, "Yes Man" on Friday night, Ryan and I decided that we aren't spontaneous enough in our lives. As a result, we decided to spend our Valentine's Day saying "yes" to whatever opportunities presented themselves.

We started off the day hitting a couple of rounds at the batting cages.

After a few intense rounds of batting, we came out of the park only to find a McDonald's right across the street. In the spirit of saying "Yes," we decided to have a romantic V-Day lunch at McDonald's. Following our "gourmet" lunch, we hopped back in the car and drove until we reached downtown Mesa. When we hit the downtown area, we parked the car and decided to take a stroll.

While venturing through the downtown area, we came across an awesome antique store. The store was massive and had a ridiculous amount of cool stuff. We spent over an hour rummaging through the two stories worth of antiques.

Later that day we had a V-Day feast at Texas Roadhouse. Following dinner, we hit up a late night showing of "Confessions Of A Shopaholic." (Although that wasn't Ryan's first pick, he was a good sport about it.) This post would be extremely long if we tried to include everything we did in the day, but those were a few of the highlights. 13 hours and only $30 later, I think we can honestly say that was the best Valentine's day ever. Hopefully, from here on out, we'll be a little bit more willing to say "yes" to new opportunities.

Chocolate Affaire

On Friday night we had a night out with some of our friends. We started the night by hitting up the "Old Spaghetti Factory" in downtown Phoenix. In case you've never been there, it's an awesome restaurant with an actual train car in the middle. Ryan took me to the restaurant for the first time in Spokane and I've loved it ever since. After dinner we headed over to the Glendale "Chocolate Affaire." The event is an annual gathering of chocolate vendors from the southwest that come to showcase and sell their products. Although the chocolate was a little expensive, it was great getting to check out the event for the first time. Live entertainment was provided, but we preferred "people watching." As always, real people at free events never disappoint.

Super Bowl Bash

It's that time again...Super Bowl time!! This year was an especially exciting Super Bowl as our Cardinals were competing for the championship! As always, Ryan made his Mom's "to-die-for" buffalo wings and I made some football-themed cupcakes. I'll be honest, I'm not a huge football fan, but the food and atmosphere of the day totally draw me in. We went over to my parents house to watch the big game and had a blast getting to hang out and watch the Cards battle the Steelers. Although we lost, it was a fun game to watch! Go Cards!!

Federal Criminal

This morning when I was getting ready for work, I was startled by a loud knock at our door. In my experience, a phone call or knock on the door at 6 in the morning is never a good thing. When I answered the door, I was greeted by two U.S. Marshals. I assumed they wanted to ask us something about our neighbors since there's been problems with them in the past...then they asked to talk with Ryan. My stomach just dropped and my mind started racing wondering what kind of trouble Ryan could've gotten in to.

When Ryan finally came into the room, they said they wanted to talk to him about a case of identity theft. Apparently, the son of a federal judges' identity had been stolen and Ryan was a suspect in the case. They had a whole file on him - including where he worked, lived (obviously), and even a picture of him. Apparently Ryan's phone number was linked to the case.

To give you some background, Ryan's phone number was issued to him by Intel when he started working there. Since he received the phone, he's recieved numerous calls and texts from all kinds of people including porn sites and car dealerships.

The Marshals questioned him as to when he got the phone and soon realized that the guy who had the phone before Ryan was who they were actually looking for.

As much as we don't like being bothered at 6 in the morning, Ryan and I are pretty pleased by this little occurance. Although Ryan being taken away in handcuff's would've made a great picture for our blog, I'm relieved to hear my husband isn't a federal criminal! ;-)

State Fair

On Tuesday night, Ryan and I were finally able to go to the AZ State Fair. One of the things that we were looking forward to the most was the greasy fair food! Although we consider ourselves to have a pretty high tolerance for greasy foods, I have to admit that we totally underestimated the effect of fair food on our bodies. After eating a massive egg roll on a stick and a foot-long corn dog, we were pretty much done for. Who knows, maybe next year we'll actually make it to fried desserts! Watch out obesity, here we come!

1 Foot Long Corn Dog + 1 Massive Egg Roll = $16.00
Admission to the Park + Riding 2 Rides = $48.00
A Night at the Fair w/ My Hubby = Priceless

A Family Weekend

This past weekend, Ryan's parents came into town to visit. Now that we're done with school and have "real" jobs, we don't get the opportunity to see them nearly as often as we'd like. It's especially fun having them in town since two of Ryan's brothers live down here in AZ as well.

It was fun getting to hang out and eat Ryan's moms' AMAZING food. Every year she makes a Halloween dinner centered around a great dish called "Dinner In A Pumpkin." My family seemed to especially enjoy the jello that looked like a brain and breadsticks that looked like fingers. Thanks for the fun weekend Dan and Mary!

Jessica Simpson Concert

Last night, Jessica Simpson had a concert after the Diamondbacks game. Our friends Tiffini and James invited us to go so we figured it would be a good way to change things up. We showed up at the game around the 7th inning to catch the end of the game before Jessica went on (obviously, we're HUGE Diamondbacks fans). After waiting through extra innings for the concert to begin, we realized that she was performing songs off her new country album. Besides not being huge country fans, we were less than impressed by her long stories between each song explaining what each song was about. After the 4th or 5th song we decided we'd had enough Jessica for the night and left. I'm not sure exacty why we went out of our way to see Jessica Simpson perform live, but I think from here on out we'll stick to watching Jessica in reruns of "Newlyweds."

End Of Summer

When we got married, Ryan received a shotgun from some of his friends as his "getting married" gift. After having to deal with me hassling him about not using it for almost 2 years, he was finally able to test it out. To celebrate Labor Day (or the "end of summer" according to our friend Tiffany), we went shooting with some of our friends. After the morning of shooting, we went over to our friends' house for a bbq and more Wii Fit. Although it was WAY too hot to be outside shooting guns, it was fun getting out and practicing our shooting skills.

Grossology

Yesterday was a special "Intel Family Day" at the Arizona Science Center so Ryan got 4 free admissions to the museum. Since Ryan had never been and I haven't been in years, we decided we would be crazy not to take advantage of the free trip. So we recruited a couple of our friends and made a day of it. We started the afternoon off going to a little Mexican restaurant in the ghetto of downtown Phoenix. The people were interesting, the restaurant was totally unsanitary, and the food was great (thanks for suggesting it James)!

After leaving the restaurant, we headed over to the science center for an afternoon of science. When we got to the center our friend Tiffany worked her magic and got us free admittance to the new "Grossology" exhibit. The exhibit was all about burping, pooping, and all of the other gross things the human body does. You can imagine what a fun time we had with that! One of the booths focused solely on the different smells of the human body. It consisted of four different pumps that squirted out different smells. Our job was to guess which smell went with which body part. In case you can't tell from the picture below, the four body parts were: mouth, armpits, feet, and anus. Yeah, that's right, we were the lucky ones who got to smell the anus! Let's just say that the exhibit definitely lived up to it's name and was extremely GROSS!! All in all, the afternoon was a total blast and you better believe we'll be hitting it up again in the near future!
